about

I’ve long been intrigued as to what keeps Anne Cawrse composing. I don’t think it’s obsession, or the chasing of a fanciful dream. Anne comes across in conversation as a rather sensible person: a quiet and diligent worker, thoughtful but practical. It’s as though she has stumbled into composing quite by accident, and now is too polite and conscientious to back out. So she simply keeps going, making sure she does her work as well as she can.

But how can you tell if what you are doing is any good? That question often loiters in the background when we catch up for coffee. No amount of critical acclaim or audience feedback or awards or commissions can answer it. They’re all helpful things to grab onto when putting together a grant application. But when you’re faced with the next blank page of music paper, you need something more… something you can’t grasp hold of…

It must be tempting, having written so much beautiful music, to think that at last you’ve ‘got’ it, that you’ve captured the key to the Good and Beautiful. But Anne knows that creativity is a gift. To reach out and take it for yourself is to turn it into a possession, at which point it fails – and we all know the ugliness of self-absorbed art.

This surrender, this holding-lightly of what is most dear to you, is the lesson contained in Advice to a Girl: “No one worth possessing can be quite possessed.” There is no bass in these delicate lines; the music floats in the treble throughout, and finally disappears into thin air. Anne’s music rises with Sara Teasdale’s poem from tremulous insecurity to – well, definitely not outright confidence, but a quiet assuredness. And so Anne keeps composing.
